EFL Trophy

The EFL Trophy is a traditional English competition that provides an opportunity for clubs from the third and fourth tiers of professional football to compete. Founded in 1956 originally as the English Trophy, the competition has gained importance as a means of development and revenue generation for smaller clubs.

History

O troféu foi criado em 1956 como o Troféu Inglês (English Trophy), evoluindo nos anos 80 para o Simod Cup e posteriormente o Zenith Data Systems Cup. Em 1999 tornou-se conhecido como o LDV Vans Trophy, e em 2006 foi rebatizado como Johnstone's Paint Trophy antes de se integrar completamente a EFL em 2016 como EFL Trophy. A competicao ofereceu historicamente oportunidades valiosas para clubes menores competirem e vencerem um troféu importante. Muitos jogadores que jogaram na EFL Trophy eventualmente subiram para niveis superiores do futebol inglês.
