LigaPro Serie A of Ecuador

LigaPro Serie A is the main football championship in Ecuador, disputed in a format of two stages with a final phase. Barcelona SC and Emelec are the most popular and successful clubs in the country. Ecuadorian football grew in international relevance after the national team's achievements in the 2002 and 2006 World Cups.

History

O campeonato equatoriano de futebol profissional foi criado em 1957, tornando-se a Liga Pro apenas em 2019 após uma reestruturação administrativa. Barcelona SC, de Guayaquil, é o clube mais tradicional e com maior número de títulos nacionais. O campeonato divide-se geograficamente entre os clubes da Costa (liderados por Barcelona e Emelec) e os da Serra (liderados por Liga de Quito e Deportivo Quito). Liga de Quito projetou o futebol equatoriano internacionalmente ao vencer a Copa Libertadores em 2008.
