Portuguese First Division

The Primeira Liga, officially named Liga Portugal Betclic for sponsorship reasons, is the top division of Portuguese football. Historically dominated by the trio of clubs known as 'the Big Three' — Benfica, Porto, and Sporting CP —, the league is internationally recognized for uncovering great talent that stands out in Europe's top leagues. Portugal has established itself as one of the world's leading exporters of high-level footballers.

History

Fundada em 1934, a Primeira Liga portuguesa tem sido dominada quase exclusivamente por Benfica, Porto e Sporting CP ao longo de sua história. O FC Porto foi o clube português de maior destaque europeu, conquistando duas Ligas dos Campeões (1987 e 2004). O Benfica, com seu estádio da Luz em Lisboa, acumula o maior número de títulos nacionais. Na última década, Benfica e Porto alternaram-se na liderança, com o Sporting CP conquistando títulos importantes em 2000 e 2021.
