Argentine First Division

The Argentine First Division, currently known as the Professional Football League, is the top division of Argentine football. Contested by 28 clubs, it is one of the most traditional and competitive leagues in South America. Historic rivals such as Boca Juniors and River Plate star in the famous Superclásico, one of the most famous derbies in the world.

History

Fundada em 1891 pela Argentine Association Football League, é uma das ligas de futebol mais antigas do mundo fora das ilhas britânicas. Durante décadas foi dominada por clubes de Buenos Aires, especialmente Boca Juniors e River Plate. Em 2019, passou por uma reformulação estrutural que criou a Liga Profesional de Fútbol como entidade organizadora independente da AFA. O formato tornou-se de pontos corridos anual após décadas de torneios curtos Apertura e Clausura.
