Scottish Premiership

The Scottish Premiership is the top division of Scottish football, contested by 12 clubs. It is dominated almost absolutely by the duopoly of Celtic and Rangers, the two great Glasgow clubs that feature in the Old Firm Derby, considered one of the most intense and historically, culturally, and religiously charged derbies in world football. The league is one of the oldest in the world in continuous operation.

History

Fundada em 1890 como a primeira liga de futebol profissional do mundo fora da Inglaterra, a liga escocesa é um marco histórico do esporte. Celtic e Rangers dominaram a competição desde o início, com o Celtic de Jock Stein estabelecendo um recorde mundial ao vencer 9 títulos consecutivos entre 1966 e 1974. Os Rangers responderam com seu próprio recorde de 9 títulos seguidos entre 1989 e 1997. Após a liquidação dos Rangers em 2012 e seu retorno pelas divisões inferiores, o Celtic dominou a liga com sequências históricas de títulos.
