Turkish Super Lig

The Super Lig is the primary professional football league in Turkey, contested by 18 clubs. It is dominated by the three major clubs from Istanbul — Galatasaray, Fenerbahçe and Beşiktaş — who possess one of the most passionate rivalries in world football. The league has grown in European relevance, especially following Galatasaray's international achievements in the early 2000s.

History

Fundada em 1959, a Süper Lig substituiu a antiga liga regional turca e unificou o futebol profissional no país. O Galatasaray conquistou destaque internacional ao vencer a UEFA Cup e a Super Copa da UEFA em 2000. O Fenerbahçe foi investigado em 2011 por um escândalo de manipulação de resultados que abalou o futebol turco. Nas últimas décadas, Galatasaray e Fenerbahçe revezaram-se como principais potências da liga, com o Trabzonspor emergindo como força competitiva.
