For the English national team, he made 35 appearances and scored one goal. He participated in the 1970 World Cup, in which he scored against Czechoslovakia. At the 1968 European Championship, he was sent off in the semi-final against Yugoslavia, becoming the first player to be sent off in a match for England's senior national team. After retiring from playing, he worked as a coach, including at Brighton, which he led to the first division in 1979.
