Alcides Ghiggia

Alcides Ghiggia is one of the most legendary players in the history of South American football, immortalized for scoring the goal that gave Uruguay the title of the 1950 World Cup at the Maracanã. The fast and skilled right winger silenced more than 200 thousand Brazilian fans on July 16, 1950, in an act that remained forever in history as the Maracanazo. He became an Italian citizen and continued his career in Italy, where he shined for Roma and Milan in Serie A during the 1950s and 1960s. Poetically, Ghiggia passed away on July 16, 2015 — exactly 65 years after the historic goal.
