Bauer

José Carlos Bauer was born in São Paulo on November 21, 1925, and died on February 4, 2007. He was one of the great midfielders of Brazilian football in the 1940s and 1950s. An idol of São Paulo, he was part of the so-called Rolo Compressor, a team that dominated the São Paulo State Championship in the 1940s. For the Brazilian National Team, he was a starter in the 1950 World Cup, held in Brazil, including the final against Uruguay at the Maracanã. For his performance in the tournament, he earned the nickname Monster of the Maracanã. He also was part of the Brazilian squad in the 1954 World Cup in Switzerland. After retiring from playing, he became a coach. On a tour through Africa, he saw young Eusébio play in Mozambique and recommended the talent to Béla Guttmann, then coach of Benfica. This is one of the most remembered episodes in the history of Portuguese football.
