Bert Trautmann was born in Bremen, Germany, on October 22, 1923. During World War II he served as a paratrooper in the Luftwaffe and was captured by British forces in 1945, being taken to a prisoner of war camp in England. After his release, he decided to remain in the country and began playing for St Helens Town. In 1949 he was signed by Manchester City, despite initial protests from fans, and won the respect of the public with high-level performances. The great moment of his career was the FA Cup final in 1956, won by City 3-1 over Birmingham City. Trautmann finished the match in neck pain and days later it was diagnosed that he had broken a vertebra. In the same year he was elected Player of the Year by the association of English journalists. He defended Manchester City until 1964, with 545 matches, and received the honorary title of OBE in 2004. He died in Spain, on July 19, 2013. His life inspired the film The Keeper, from 2018.
