He is the world champion coach with the Brazilian National Team at the 1994 World Cup in the United States, when Brazil defeated Italy in the final by penalty kicks after 24 years without winning the tournament. Parreira began in football as a fitness coach and was part of the technical staff of the Brazilian National Team that won the 1970 championship under Mario Zagallo's command. This experience led him to become a coach, starting a career path that would make him one of the most internationally experienced professionals in Brazilian football. He also managed clubs such as Fluminense, Corinthians, São Paulo, Santos, and Internacional, in addition to Fenerbahçe in Turkey. His pragmatic and organized style marked the 1994 team, supported by the defensive duo, the midfield of Dunga and Mauro Silva, and the attacking duo Romário and Bebeto. After ending his playing career, he continued to work as a director and technical consultant.
