Cheick Tioté was born in Yamoussoukro, Ivory Coast, on June 21, 1986. A tough-tackling midfielder with excellent ball recovery, he built his career in Europe, playing in Dutch football and the Premier League. At FC Twente, he was a key player in the Dutch championship-winning team of 2009-10, the club's first Eredivisie title in history. In 2010, he transferred to Newcastle United, where he established himself as a regular midfielder. At Newcastle, he is remembered for a volley in a 4-4 draw against Arsenal, on February 5, 2011, after the team lost 4-0 in the first half. For the Ivory Coast national team, he was runner-up at the African Cup of Nations in 2012. In 2017, he joined Beijing Enterprises in China. On June 5, 2017, at the age of 30, he died after feeling unwell during a team training session in Beijing.
