Cliff Bastin

Cliff Bastin was born in 1912 and was one of the greatest left wingers in the history of English football. He started at Exeter City and, still very young, was signed by Arsenal in 1929, the club he would defend until 1946. At Arsenal in the 1930s, under Herbert Chapman, he became a key piece of a dominant team. He was English champion in 1930–31, 1932–33, 1933–34, 1934–35 and 1937–38, and won the FA Cup in 1930, at just 18 years old, and in 1936. For Arsenal he played 396 matches and scored 178 goals, a club record that lasted decades until being surpassed by Ian Wright in 1997. He also played 21 times for England, scoring 12 goals. His hearing impairment exempted him from military service in World War II, but he continued to play during the conflict. He died in 1991.
