Domingos da Guia
Domingos da Guia, born on November 19, 1912 in the São Cristóvão neighborhood, Rio de Janeiro, is considered one of the greatest defenders in the history of world football. Nicknamed 'The Divine Master', he revolutionized the defender position by introducing elegance, technique, and positional intelligence to a role that was practiced predominantly physically in his era. His career spanned Brazil, Argentina, and Uruguay, playing for the best clubs of the three nations. At Boca Juniors and Nacional de Montevideo, he confirmed his greatness in different football contexts, being acclaimed throughout the South American continent as the most complete defender of his generation. He represented the Brazilian National Team at the 1938 World Cup in France, where Brazil finished in third place — the best finish in history at that time. His brother, Ladislau da Guia, was also a professional player, forming one of the most important families in national football. Domingos passed away on May 18, 2000, in Rio de Janeiro.
