Elías Figueroa

Elías Figueroa

Elías Figueroa Brander is considered the greatest player in the history of Chilean football and one of the most complete defenders that South America has ever produced. Nicknamed 'The Knight of Football', he was elected South American Player of the Year on three consecutive occasions — 1974, 1975, and 1976 — a feat that no other defender on the continent has repeated to this day. His trademark was exceptional game reading combined with elegance. Figueroa rarely resorted to hard fouls or physical disputes; he anticipated plays and intercepted with mastery, being one of the first modern defenders to influence his team's ball distribution with precise passes and game vision. His international career included spells in Uruguay, where he defended Nacional and Peñarol, and in Brazil, where he became an idol at Internacional de Porto Alegre. At the Rio Grande do Sul club, from 1973 to 1977, he won titles and left an indelible mark that makes him remembered to this day by the team's supporters. For the Chilean National Team, he played in three World Cups — 1966, 1974, and 1982 — representing the country over 16 years of dedication. His longevity and consistent level are proof of an exceptional career and rare professionalism.
