Evaristo

José Evaristo de Macedo, known simply as Evaristo, was one of the first great Brazilian players to achieve success in European football. Born on September 25, 1930 in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, he emerged from the Minas Gerais youth categories before crossing the Atlantic and conquering Spain. In 1957, he signed a contract with FC Barcelona, where he would become an idol of the Catalan supporters. During his time at the Spanish club (1957–1962), he won two La Liga titles (1958-59 and 1959-60) and a Copa del Rey, being considered one of the most decisive strikers in Barcelona's history during that period. After Barcelona, he also played for Fiorentina (Italy) and Atlético de Madrid before retiring. For the Brazilian National Team, he was called up on several occasions and participated in South American competitions, contributing with his technical quality to the national squad. Evaristo is considered a pioneer and ambassador of Brazilian football in Europe, paving the way that so many national players would follow in the following decades. His legacy at Barcelona is recognized to this day by the club and the Spanish sports press.
