Freddy Rincón

Freddy Rincón was the greatest midfielder in Colombia's history and one of the most complete players of his generation in South America. Born in Buenaventura in 1966, the 'Colossus of Buenaventura' stood out for his impressive physical build, sharp game vision, and ability to score decisive goals in the most important moments. His career spanned the world's greatest football stages, with stints at Palmeiras, Napoli, Real Madrid, and Corinthians. In Brazil, where he spent the longest phase of his career, he became an idol especially at Corinthians, the club through which he won the 1999 Brazilian Championship and other titles, being one of the leaders of that era's championship squad. He represented the Colombian national team in the World Cups of 1990, 1994, and 1998, accumulating 84 matches for the national team. At the 1990 World Cup in Italy, he scored the equalizer against West Germany in the final minutes of the group match, securing Colombia's historic qualification for the round of 16 — a moment that became etched in continental football's memory. Freddy Rincón passed away on April 13, 2022, in Cali, as a victim of a traffic accident. His death generated mourning throughout Latin America, and he is unanimously recognized as one of the greatest Colombian players of all time.
