Friaça

Friaça

Friaça was a Brazilian right winger who entered history as the author of Brazil's goal in the 1950 World Cup final, the Maracanazo. Revealed in Fluminense football, he was renowned with the São Paulo shirt, where he formed historic attacks in the 1940s and won Paulista titles. Swift and a skilled dribbler, he was one of the most respected wingers in the country. In the 1950 Cup, held in Brazil, Friaça opened the scoring in the final against Uruguay at the Maracanã, in the second minute of the second half. The Uruguayan comeback with goals from Schiaffino and Ghiggia, however, transformed that July 16th into the greatest sporting tragedy in Brazilian football, and Friaça's goal was eternized as a glimpse of joy before the silence of nearly 200 thousand people.
