Gheorghe Popescu
Gheorghe Popescu, affectionately called 'Gică' by Romanians, is the greatest captain in the history of Romanian football and one of the most complete center-backs of his generation. Born in 1967 in Calafat, he led the Romanian national team in its greatest campaign, reaching the quarter-finals of the 1994 World Cup in the United States. His career took him to Europe's biggest clubs: PSV Eindhoven, Tottenham Hotspur, Barcelona and Galatasaray. His peak came in Turkey, where he won the 2000 UEFA Champions League in historic fashion with Galatasaray, defeating Real Madrid on penalties. With 115 appearances for Romania, he is one of the most capped players in the country's history.
