Gianluca Zambrotta was born in Como, Italy, on February 19, 1977. A fullback and winger, he was right-footed but played well on both sides of the pitch, which gave him enormous tactical versatility. He started at Como, moved to Bari and established himself at Juventus, where he played from 1999 to 2006 and won the Italian championship in 2001–02 and 2002–03, as well as reaching the Champions League final in 2003. He later played for Barcelona (2006–2008) and Milan (2008–2012), where he won the Italian Championship in 2010–11. For the Italian national team he played 98 matches and scored 2 goals, between 1999 and 2010. He was runner-up in the European Championship in 2000 and world champion in 2006 in Germany, being selected for the World Cup squad. He ended his career at Chiasso, Switzerland, in 2014, a club he also coached afterwards.
