Gilmar

Gilmar

Gilmar dos Santos Neves, born on August 22, 1930 in Santo André, SP, is considered one of the greatest goalkeepers in Brazilian football history. Two-time World Cup champion with the Brazilian National Team in the 1958 and 1962 World Cups, Gilmar defended the colors of Corinthians and Santos throughout a career marked by technical excellence and leadership. His secure style and ability to instill confidence throughout the defense made him a reference at his position for nearly two decades. At the 1958 World Cup, in Sweden, he was instrumental in Brazil's first World Championship victory, alongside Pelé, Garrincha and Didi. In 1962, in Chile, he repeated the feat, establishing himself as the best goalkeeper of his generation. At Corinthians, the club where he spent most of his career, Gilmar won multiple São Paulo state championships and became an icon for the black-and-white supporters. Transferred to Santos in 1961, he joined the team that would dominate South American and world football during that golden era of Pelé. Gilmar passed away on August 25, 2013, two days after turning 83, leaving an immeasurable legacy for Brazilian football as one of the most reliable goalkeepers Brazil has ever produced.
