Heleno de Freitas

Heleno de Freitas

Heleno de Freitas was one of the most talented and tragic strikers in the history of Brazilian football. Born on July 7, 1920 in Ubá, Minas Gerais, he became known as 'The Cursed Prince' due to his unique combination of physical beauty, football genius, and turbulent personal life. He stood out mainly for Botafogo de Futebol e Regatas in the 1940s, where he became the great idol of Rio fans. He was considered the most skillful and dangerous player of his generation in Brazil, combining bewildering dribbles with precise finishing and overwhelming field presence. His personal life, marked by excesses and syphilis contraction, led to progressive deterioration of his physical and mental health throughout the 1950s. He tried to recover his career playing in Argentina and Uruguay, but the disease advanced irreversibly. Heleno died on November 8, 1959, at age 39, hospitalized at the Espírita Hospital of Barbacena, Minas Gerais. His story was adapted for cinema in the acclaimed film 'Heleno' (2011), directed by José Henrique Fonseca, with Rodrigo Santoro playing the 'Cursed Prince'.
