Helmut Rahn

Helmut Rahn

Helmut Rahn is one of the greatest heroes in German football, immortalized for scoring the goal that gave West Germany the 1954 World Cup title in one of the most surprising results in sports history — the so-called 'Miracle of Bern'. Born on August 16, 1929 in Essen, he became a striker known for power, speed and precision in his shots. In the 1954 final in Bern, with Germany trailing the mighty Hungary of Puskás and Kocsis 2-0, Rahn was the hero of the historic comeback, scoring twice to seal the final score of 3-2. The winning goal, narrated with emotion by broadcaster Herbert Zimmermann with the famous cry 'Rahn schießt! Tooor!', became part of German cultural heritage and is one of the most memorable moments in World Cup history. His career was dedicated mainly to German football, where he stood out playing for Rot-Weiss Essen. He participated in two World Cups — 1954 (champion) and 1958 (4th place with Germany) — finishing among the top scorers in both. He passed away on August 14, 2003 in Essen, just days before turning 74.
