John Aldridge

John Aldridge was born in Liverpool in 1958 and built a career marked by goals. He played for South Liverpool, Newport County and Oxford United before achieving his dream of playing for Liverpool, the club he supported since childhood. Signed in 1987, he was the top scorer of the English champions of 1987–88, with over 25 goals in the league. In the 1988 FA Cup final, he had a penalty saved by Dave Beasant in a defeat to Wimbledon. In 1989, in the final against Everton, he scored the opening goal and Liverpool were champions, in an atmosphere of mourning following the Hillsborough disaster. He then moved to Real Sociedad in Spain and ended his career at Tranmere Rovers, where he was also a player-manager. For Ireland, he made 69 appearances and scored 19 goals, and appeared in the World Cups of 1990 and 1994. In 1994 he had a controversial incident with the fourth official before coming on as a substitute against Mexico, a match in which he scored his goal in the tournament.
