José María Giménez was born in Toledo, in the Canelones department, in Uruguay. He started at Danubio, from Montevideo, and caught the attention of Atlético Madrid while still very young. He arrived at Atlético in 2013 and became an important part of Diego Simeone's defense. For the Spanish club, he was champion of La Liga in 2013-14 and 2020-21, of the Europa League in 2018 and of the UEFA Super Cup in 2018. For the Uruguayan national team, he played in the World Cups of 2014, 2018 and 2022. In Russia, in 2018, he headed in, in added time, the goal of Uruguay's 1-0 victory over Egypt on their debut.
