José Emilio Santamaría was born in Montevideo and was one of the greatest defenders in world football in the 1950s and 1960s. He started at Nacional in Uruguay. In 1957 he arrived at Real Madrid, where he formed the defense of the team that won the first editions of the European Cup. He defended the Uruguay national team at the 1954 World Cup and later, after becoming naturalized, Spain's national team at the 1962 World Cup.
