Josimar

Josimar

Josimar Higino Pereira was born in Rio de Janeiro on September 19, 1961, and was raised in Cidade de Deus. Developed in Botafogo's youth categories, he joined the main squad in 1982, being converted from right-winger to right-back due to tactical necessity by coach Jorge Vieira. He became an idol of the Botafogo fans throughout the 1980s, a period when he was part of the undefeated Carioca championship-winning squad of 1989. He also had a brief spell at Sevilla, Spain, in 1987, before returning to Brazil. Josimar became world-renowned at the 1986 World Cup, when he was hastily called up to replace Leandro, who was cut just before the trip. In the tournament, he scored two spectacular goals — against Northern Ireland and against Poland — the latter considered by FIFA one of the most beautiful in World Cup history. After Botafogo, the full-back also played for Internacional, Novo Hamburgo, Bangu, Fortaleza, Bolivian side Jorge Wilstermann, Fast Clube, Venezuelan Mineros de Guayana, and Baré, from Roraima, where he ended his career in 1997.
