Lars Ricken was born in Dortmund and spent virtually his entire career at Borussia Dortmund, the club where he made his professional debut in 1994, while still very young. He entered club history in the 1996-97 Champions League final against Juventus in Munich. He had just come on as a substitute when, moments later, he struck a first-time volley over the goalkeeper and scored Dortmund's third goal in their 3-1 victory. In the same season, the club won the Intercontinental Cup. Ricken also won the German Championship in 1995, 1996 and 2002, and represented the German national team in 16 matches. Injuries hampered the final part of his career. After retiring as a player, he remained connected to Dortmund in off-field roles.
