Matt Le Tissier was born in Saint Peter Port, on the island of Guernsey, on October 14, 1968. An attacking midfielder of refined technique, he became famous for his precision in long-distance shots and his composure in penalty kicks. He played for only Southampton as a professional, from 1986 to 2002, and became the greatest idol in the club's history. He scored 209 goals for the team and converted 47 out of 48 penalties taken, one of the best records in English football. Despite his prominence in the Premier League, he had only eight appearances for the England national team, without scoring goals, and refused offers from bigger clubs to remain at Southampton. After retiring from his career, he became a television commentator.
