Stephen Appiah was a Ghanaian midfielder and one of the main names of the generation that led Ghana to its first World Cup. He had a career in Italian football, playing for Udinese, Parma, Brescia and Juventus, as well as a spell at Fenerbahçe, in Turkey, where he stood out as a midfielder with strong physical presence and good ability to support the attack. As captain of Ghana's national team, he led the squad in the qualification and participation in the 2006 World Cup, in Germany, the country's first in the tournament, in which the Black Stars advanced to the round of 16. Recurring injuries limited the final part of his career, but he remained as a symbolic figure of the growth of Ghanaian football on the international stage.
