Nicolae Dobrin

Nicolae Dobrin was born in Pitești, Romania, on August 26, 1947, and is considered one of the greatest players in the history of Romanian football. A refined midfielder, he spent practically his entire career at FC Argeș Pitești, a club from his hometown. With Argeș, he won the two only national titles in the club's history, in 1972 and 1979, a rare feat in a championship dominated by the major clubs of Bucharest. His loyalty to the local team became part of legend: he refused transfers that would have taken him to bigger clubs. He was elected Romanian Footballer of the Year three times, in 1966, 1967 and 1971. For Romania's national team, he played in the 1970 World Cup in Mexico, accumulating more than 40 matches for the national team. Dobrin ended his career in the early 1980s and died on October 26, 2007, in Pitești. FC Argeș's stadium came to bear his name.
