Nuno Gomes

Nuno Gomes

Nuno Gomes was one of the great Portuguese strikers of his generation, a symbol of Benfica at the turn of the century and a constant presence in Portugal's national team between 1996 and 2011. Born in Amarante, he adopted his artistic name in tribute to Brazilian star Fernando Gomes, an idol of his childhood. Discovered by Boavista, he transferred to Benfica in 1997 and quickly became a Benfica icon. His major international breakthrough was Euro 2000, where he scored four goals, including Portugal's goal in the semifinal against France, and was selected for the tournament team of the match. His performance earned him a transfer to Fiorentina, where he won the Coppa Italia in 2001 alongside names such as Rui Costa. Back at Benfica in 2002, he spent nearly a decade leading the club, winning the Portuguese Championship in 2004-05 — the club's first in 11 years — and in 2009-10, as well as the Portuguese Cup and League Cups. For the national team, he played in the World Cups in 2002 and 2006 and was runner-up at Euro 2004, at home. He ended his career in 2013, after spells with Braga and Blackburn Rovers, with 79 appearances and 29 goals for Portugal.
