Olaf Thon was born in Gelsenkirchen on May 1st, 1966, and is an idol of Schalke 04, the club from the city where he grew up. A midfielder and defender, he stood out very young and reached the German national team while still a teenager. He played for Bayern Munich between 1988 and 1994, a period in which he won three Bundesliga titles. He returned to Schalke in 1994 and was a key player in winning the UEFA Cup in 1996-97. For West Germany and later for Germany, he totaled 52 appearances and 5 goals, and was part of the 1990 World Cup-winning squad.
