Orlando Peçanha
Orlando Peçanha de Carvalho was one of the greatest defenders in Brazilian football during the 1950s and 1960s, remembered mainly for the defensive partnership he formed with Bellini in the 1958 World Cup victory in Sweden. He made his professional debut in 1955 at Vasco da Gama, becoming Carioca champion the following year alongside Bellini. While Bellini was the more physical defender of the duo, Orlando stood out for his reading of the game and anticipation ability, characteristics that led to his call-up for the 1958 World Cup. With the defense formed by the two, Brazil conceded only 4 goals in 6 matches during their unprecedented championship campaign. After another spell at Vasco, where he was again Carioca champion in 1958, Orlando transferred to Boca Juniors in Argentina between 1961 and 1965, a period in which he won two Argentine Championship titles. Subsequently, he played for Santos between 1965 and 1969, winning the São Paulo Championship twice and the Brazil Cup in 1965. He ended his career in 1970, returning to Vasco da Gama. For the Brazilian national team, he also competed in the 1966 World Cup in England. In total, he earned 34 appearances for Brazil, with 26 victories, 7 draws and only 1 defeat. He died in Rio de Janeiro on February 10, 2010, at the age of 74.
