Pietro Vierchowod, nicknamed Czar because of his Russian heritage, was one of the longest-serving and outstanding defenders in the history of Italian football. His career took him through Como, Fiorentina, Roma, Sampdoria and Juventus, among others, and extended until he was 41 years old, in 2000. At Sampdoria, where he played for more than a decade, he was a crucial player for the Italian championship-winning team of 1990-91 and winner of the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1989-90. With Juventus, he won the Champions League in 1995-96. For the Italian national team, he played 45 matches.
