Roberto Di Matteo

Roberto Di Matteo was born in Schaffhausen, Switzerland, son of Italian immigrants, and started his football career in Swiss football before transferring to Lazio in 1993. Playing as a midfielder, he was called up by the Italian national team and played in the 1996 European Championship. In 1996, he transferred to Chelsea, where he experienced his best years. He scored the fastest goal in an FA Cup final at the time, at 42 seconds, against Middlesbrough in 1997, a record that lasted until 2009. He also scored the winning goal in the 2000 final, in a 1-0 victory over Aston Villa, the last final played at the old Wembley. A serious leg fracture in 2000 cut short his career, and he retired in 2002. As a manager, he managed MK Dons and West Bromwich and, in March 2012, took over Chelsea as interim manager, winning the FA Cup and the UEFA Champions League that year, with victory over Bayern Munich on penalties in Munich.
