A left-back, he was one of the pillars of Manchester United's Busby Babes, a young squad assembled by coach Matt Busby in the 1950s. He made his debut for United in 1951 and quickly established himself in the starting lineup. He went on to captain the team and led the club to English Championship titles in 1951-52, 1955-56, and 1956-57, as well as taking the team to the semi-finals of the European Cup in 1956-57.
