Tommy Taylor was born in Barnsley and stood out as a centre-forward at the city's club before being signed by Manchester United in March 1953 for £29,999. At United, he became one of the main names of the Busby Babes, scoring 131 goals in 191 matches and winning the English title in 1955-56 and 1956-57. He was strong in the air and extremely efficient in finishing. For the England national team, he scored 16 goals in 19 matches. He died at age 26, on 6 February 1958, in the Munich air disaster, and is remembered as one of the greatest centre-forwards in the club's history.
