Zbigniew Boniek

Zbigniew Boniek

Zbigniew Boniek was one of the great European stars of the early 1980s, recognized for his technique, speed, and game vision as an attacking midfielder. Developed by Zawisza Bydgoszcz, he stood out at Widzew Łódź, the club for which he scored 50 goals between 1975 and 1982 and won the club's first Polish League Championship titles in 1981 and 1982. In 1982, he transferred to Juventus, becoming one of the first players from the Communist bloc to play for a major Western club. In Italy, he formed one of the most feared attacking partnerships in Serie A alongside Michel Platini, winning the Italian Championship and the Cup Winners' Cup in 1984 — with a decisive goal in the final against Porto — as well as the European Cup in 1985, against Liverpool, in the tragic Heysel final. In 1985, he joined Roma, where he won the Italian Cup in 1986 before retiring in 1988. For the Poland national team, he played in three consecutive World Cups (1978, 1982, and 1986), notably in 1982 in Spain, when he scored a hat-trick in a 3-0 victory over Belgium and helped his country finish in third place, their best finish in history. After retirement, he became a sports executive, serving as president of the Polish Football Federation and vice-president of UEFA between 2007 and 2019.
