1. FC Saarbrücken is the main club of the Saar state in Germany. It was one of the founders of the Bundesliga in 1963 and became famous for its great campaigns in the DFB-Pokal playing in lower divisions.

History

Founded in 1903, the club had a different trajectory from other German clubs after World War II. At that time, Saar was a protectorate separate from Germany. Saarbrücken represented the region in the first edition of the European Cup, in 1955-56, and defeated Milan 4-3 in San Siro in the first leg. Back in German football, the club disputed the German Championship final in 1952 and lost to VfB Stuttgart 3-2. In 1963, it was one of the founders of the Bundesliga, but fell in the first season. In recent decades, Saarbrücken has stood out in the cups. In 2019-20, still in the fourth division, it reached the DFB-Pokal semi-final after eliminating Fortuna Düsseldorf on penalties, and lost to Bayer Leverkusen. In 2023-24, already in the 3. Liga, it eliminated Bayern Munich, Eintracht Frankfurt and Borussia Mönchengladbach before falling in the semi-final against Kaiserslautern.
