Associação Atlética São Bento
Historic club from São Paulo's capital, one of the protagonists of the first decades of São Paulo football. It was two-time Paulista champion before ceasing its professional football activities in the 1930s.
History
Associação Atlética São Bento was founded in 1900 by students and former students of São Bento School, in downtown São Paulo, during the amateur era of Brazilian football. The club quickly established itself among the main forces of the Campeonato Paulista, competing on equal footing with Paulistano, São Paulo Athletic, and Germânia. The club's peak came with victories in the Campeonato Paulista in 1914 and 1925, which consolidated São Bento as one of the great clubs in the city during that period. Its matches against Paulistano were among the most anticipated fixtures in the São Paulo calendar of that time. With the professionalization of football in the 1930s, the club, rooted in amateur traditions, lost ground and eventually abandoned high-level football. Despite its early demise, São Bento remains in memory as a fundamental part of São Paulo football's formation, and it revealed and housed important players from the pioneer era, such as forward Friedenreich, who wore its colors during part of his career.
