Milan from 1988 to 1990, managed by Arrigo Sacchi, is one of the most influential teams in the history of football. It won the European Cup in 1989 and 1990 with zone marking and ball pressure.

History

Arrigo Sacchi took over Milan in 1987 at the invitation of president Silvio Berlusconi and implemented a style based on a high defensive line, zone marking, and line compacting. The team became Italian champions in 1987–88 and won the Italian Supercup that same year. The Dutch trio formed by Ruud Gullit, Marco van Basten, and Frank Rijkaard combined with a strong Italian core featuring Franco Baresi, Paolo Maldini, Alessandro Costacurta, Mauro Tassotti, Roberto Donadoni, and Carlo Ancelotti. On May 24, 1989, at Camp Nou, Milan crushed Steaua Bucharest 4-0 in the European Cup final, with two goals from Gullit and two from Van Basten. On May 23, 1990, in Vienna, they defeated Benfica 1-0, with Rijkaard scoring, and won back-to-back European titles. During this period, the club also won the UEFA Super Cup in 1989 and 1990 and the Intercontinental Cup in 1989 against Atlético Nacional and in 1990 against Olimpia.
