Albacete Balompié is the main club in the region of Castilla-La Mancha, in Spain. It became famous in the early 1990s, when Benito Floro's team was promoted in successive seasons and finished in 7th place in La Liga, earning the nickname 'Queso Mecánico'.
History
Founded in 1940 in the city of Albacete, Albacete Balompié spent its first decades in the lower divisions of Spanish football. The club plays its matches at Estadio Carlos Belmonte and has always had white as its main color. The turning point came with coach Benito Floro. In successive seasons, Albacete left Segunda División B, became Segunda División champions in 1990-91 and reached La Liga for the first time. On their elite debut, in 1991-92, the team finished in 7th place, and the Spanish press nicknamed them 'Queso Mecánico', in reference to the Dutch 'A Clockwork Orange' and the typical Manchego cheese of the region. Albacete remained in the top division until 1996 and returned to it between 2003 and 2005. Since then, it has alternated between Segunda División and the lower divisions, but continues to be a symbol of one of the most surprising campaigns in modern Spanish football.
