Alemannia Aachen

Alemannia Aachen is a German club from the city of Aachen, in North Rhine-Westphalia, founded on December 16, 1900. Its most recent major achievement was reaching the German Cup final in 2004, while still competing in the second division.

History

The club was founded on December 16, 1900 as Aachener Turn- und Sportverein Alemannia 1900 and became one of the traditions of West German football. Its historic stadium, the Tivoli, was built in 1908 and has been renovated several times. Alemannia reached the German Cup final in 1953, when they lost to Rot-Weiss Essen, and finished as runners-up in the German championship in the 1968-69 Bundesliga season, behind Bayern Munich. The most memorable campaign came in 2004. Still in the second division, the team eliminated 1860 Munich, Bayern Munich and Borussia Mönchengladbach and reached the final in Berlin on May 29, losing 3-2 to Werder Bremen. The UEFA Cup spot came from that campaign, and the European matches were played at Cologne's stadium, because the old Tivoli did not meet the competition's requirements. The club played in the Bundesliga in 2006-07 but was relegated, and went through financial difficulties that led to insolvency in 2012. In August 2009 it inaugurated the new Tivoli, with a capacity of 32,960 spectators.
