América Football Club

América Football Club, known as Coelho, is one of the most traditional clubs in Minas Gerais. Founded in 1912, the club competes in the Minas Gerais derby against Atlético and Cruzeiro and has a history marked by ups and downs in the elite division. In the 2020s, América experienced one of its best phases, with participation in continental competitions.

History

Founded in 1912 by members of the Italian community in Belo Horizonte, América Mineiro is the third most popular team in Minas Gerais' capital. The club won the Brazilian Championship in 1997 and has several state titles in its trophy cabinet. In the following decades, Coelho oscillated between Series A and Series B, but shone again in the 2021 season, reaching the quarterfinals of the Copa Libertadores. This historic campaign represented the peak of the club in South American football.
