América Football Club (PE)
América Football Club, nicknamed Mequinha, is one of the oldest clubs in Pernambuco. It dominated state football in the 1910s and 1920s, when it won six Pernambuco titles.
History
América Football Club was founded in 1914 in Recife and is one of the pioneers of Pernambuco football. Affectionately known as Mequinha, the club participated in the early editions of the Pernambuco Championship and helped organize football in the state. Its glory period came in the 1910s and 1920s, when América won six state titles and competed on equal footing with Sport, Náutico, and Santa Cruz, forming the historical elite of Recife football. With the professionalization of football, the club lost ground to Pernambuco's iron trio and began alternating participations between state divisions. Nevertheless, Mequinha keeps its centennial tradition alive and continues to compete in competitions organized by the Pernambuco Football Federation.
