America 1960
America's 1960 team won the Carioca Championship that year, the seventh and last state title in the history of the red-and-white club from Tijuca. Led by young coach Jorge Vieira, the team overcame Rio's biggest clubs and secured the trophy in the decisive match against Fluminense at the Maracanã.
History
America Football Club was founded on September 18, 1904, in Rio de Janeiro, and became one of the most traditional clubs in Rio football during the first decades of the 20th century. Before 1960, the club had already been Carioca champion in 1913, 1916, 1922, 1928, 1931, and 1935. After the 1935 title, America went through a long drought of 25 years without winning the state championship, while Flamengo, Fluminense, Vasco, and Botafogo dominated the competition in the Maracanã era. In 1960, under the command of Jorge Vieira, then a very young coach for the standards of the time, America assembled a competitive team and reached the final stretch of the championship in direct contention for the title. The conquest was secured in the decisive confrontation against Fluminense at the Maracanã. The 1960 title is to this day the last Carioca Championship won by America. Therefore, that squad holds a special place in the club's memory and is remembered as America's last great moment among Rio football's protagonists.
