History
Founded on October 14, 1904 in the Catumbi neighborhood in Rio de Janeiro, America Football Club is one of the most traditional associations in Brazilian football. The club actively participated in the formation of Rio football and was one of the pioneers in organizing the sport in Brazil. The golden period of América-RJ occurred in the decades from 1940 to 1960, when the club competed on equal footing with the major forces in national football. In 1960, América won the Brazilian Championship — at that time contested under the format of the Roberto Gomes Pedrosa Tournament — its greatest national title and one of the landmarks in the club's history. The Carioca Championship was the main stage of glory for América throughout its history. The club won the state competition on several occasions, with special hegemony in the first decades of the 20th century, when it was one of the dominant forces in Fluminense football. In recent decades, the club has faced financial and sporting difficulties, competing in the lower divisions of Brazilian football. Nevertheless, América-RJ keeps its centennial history alive and continues to be a symbol of Rio de Janeiro's football tradition.
