Americano Futebol Clube
Americano Futebol Clube is the biggest club in Campos dos Goytacazes, the largest city in the interior of Rio de Janeiro State, founded in 1914. Known as the Steel Squadron, the club represents the football passion of Northern Rio de Janeiro State and has competed in Serie B of the Brazilian Championship. It is one of the most traditional clubs outside the Rio-São Paulo axis in Brazilian football.
History
Founded in 1914 in the city of Campos dos Goytacazes, the largest municipality in the interior of Rio de Janeiro State and a historic center of sugarcane production in Fluminense, Americano FC quickly became the football symbol of the region. The club brought together supporters from all social classes and built a very strong identity in Northern Fluminense. Throughout the 20th century, Americano participated in editions of the Rio de Janeiro Championship and competed in national competitions of lower divisions. Estádio Primeiro de Maio, located in the heart of Campos, is home to one of the most passionate fan bases in the interior of Fluminense. The club experienced moments of national expression when competing in Serie B of the Brazilian Championship, bringing the name of Campos dos Goytacazes to elite Brazilian football. Generations of players left the interior of Fluminense heading to major centers of national football, keeping alive the legacy of the Steel Squadron.
