Asante Kotoko SC

Asante Kotoko SC

Asante Kotoko is the most popular and successful club in Ghana, based in Kumasi. Two-time CAF Champions League winner, the club is considered one of the greatest on the entire African continent and represents the rich Ashanti culture.

History

Founded in 1935 in Kumasi, the heart of the Ashanti people in Ghana, Asante Kotoko grew alongside the cultural identity of the region and became a symbol of pride for millions of Ghanaians. The name 'Kotoko', which means porcupine in the Twi language, represents the resilience and strength of the Ashanti people. The club experienced its golden era in the 1960s and 1970s, winning multiple titles in the Ghanaian Premier League and standing out on the African continental stage. In 1970, Kotoko won its first CAF Champions League, defeating clubs from across the continent in a historic campaign that marked African football. In 1983, the club repeated the continental feat by winning the CAF Champions League again, consolidating its position among Africa's greatest clubs. The Baba Yara Sports Stadium, located in Kumasi, became an almost invincible fortress and one of the most feared stadiums in African football. The rivalry with Hearts of Oak, from Accra, is considered one of the greatest in African football — the 'Super Clash' between the two teams brings Ghana to a standstill with each edition. With dozens of national titles and two continental crowns, Asante Kotoko is Ghana's most supported club and an ambassador of African football to the world.
